The bookery project

Project Type

Interior Design Collab

The Bookery project aimed to create a modular and replicable library design for primary schools across South Africa, establishing a unified and modern “Bookery look and feel” that embodies warmth, creativity, and inclusivity. With nearly 80% of schools lacking libraries, the design needed to serve as more than a reading space- it had to become a central hub for learning, curiosity, and collaboration.

The final design solution creates a space that is both playful and purposeful, designed to encourage exploration and comfort. By repurposing selected items and creating a hand-painted mural, we were able to keep the design solution both cost-effective, functional and fun.

Distinct floor colours define functional zones, while a biophilic-inspired book display adds visual balance and versatility, serving as a movable bookcase, announcement board, and privacy screen. Interactive wall silhouettes invite children to draw their own faces, fostering a sense of ownership and belonging.
Upcycled plastic crates were incorporated as modular, cost-effective elements that support sustainability and adaptability. Ottomans with detachable backrests provide flexible seating options, while a movable stage doubles as a reading nook. Adjustable tables enhance functionality, allowing the space to evolve with the learners’ needs. Overall, the design reflects inclusivity, creativity, and the practical realities of under-resourced school environments.
