The circle of senses

Project Type

Caesarstone Competition

The Caesarstone Student Designer Competition 2025 required the design of an inclusive urban retreat situated within Emmarentia Dam, Johannesburg. Guided by the theme “Design with Empathy”, the brief called for the creation of a restorative environment that promotes well-being, reflection, and reconnection with nature.
Participants were encouraged to explore the relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape, integrating the five senses- sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell- to cultivate an immersive and inclusive spatial experience. The project emphasized digital detox, accessibility, and environmental sensitivity, challenging designers to consider how architecture and interior design can foster emotional balance, community engagement, and a deeper connection between people and place.

When researching the site, the Willow trees immediately stood out, reminding me of childhood days spent playing beneath them on the farm. This memory inspired me to weave Willow-like elements into my design. I later discovered that Weeping Willows symbolise flexibility and resilience, qualities that guided my vision to create a calm, supportive space for reflection and renewal.
The design contrasts a circular floor plan with linear stone walls, whose shadows echo the dappled light beneath a Willow tree. Organic, flowing forms inspired by branches are reflected in the pathways and amphitheater layout.

Entrance and Exit - Sight: Patterned shadows guide visitors through light and darkness.
Sour Flower Garden & Pathway -Taste, Sound: The path invites exploration through moments of intensity before leading toward calm.
Rocking Chair Area - Sight: A tranquil space above the water for stillness and reflection.
Hanging Stones - Sight, Sound: Suspended stones create gentle sounds, completing the sensory experience.
